TREE CAMOUFLAGE
C-print Fuji Matt Crystal archive paper, © 2009 - 2015
ENGLISH
The photography series portrays trees grown on the artificial hills of waste in the landfills in Bortolotto, Fungaia Monte Somma, Masseria del Pozzo, Novelle, Santa Maria la Nova, and Scalzapecora in the province of Naples.
Human activity has altered the natural topography of the area. Over time, these toxic piles have been assimilated into nature and have become part of today’s landscape.
Raised on contaminated land, they are crossed inside by a system of pipes for discharging fermentation gases.
The thin trees, whether they grew spontaneously or planted to create a natural appearance, form a sort of deadly camouflage. Having ended up here unintentionally, they share the unfortunate fate of those born in these polluted environments and have resigned themselves to living in them.
The films have been treated using a cross-processing technique, resulting in desaturated colours and a dystopian atmosphere. This technique, which alters the development of chemicals meant for different types of film, highlights the unnatural aspects of the photographed landscape.
